Taming the Prairie: Part 3

Planting & Establishing Native Prairie Plants

While there are keys that remain the same no matter the plant you are putting in the ground, there are a few special tips to keep in mind when planting and establishing native prairie plants. In this episode of Unearth Horticulture, I demonstrate correct planting of a prairie native—Liatris spicata—in my trial garden.

Here are a few of the topics covered:

  • Selecting the right tool

  • Mulching to the correct depth

  • Digging a proper hole

  • Watering for healthy perennial establishment

In the last establishment of my four-part native prairie plant series in the Garden Gander I will run through what a long-term vision looks like for established native gardens, and what maintenance tasks you can expect down the road.
